How Many Clothes Do I Need?

Gym kit

How many gym clothes do I need?

Sweaty kit is a single-wear item, so this is the simplest row in the whole wardrobe: one top-and-bottom set for every workout between laundry loads, plus one spare so a missed wash never cancels a session.

Underwear and socks are shown too, because every workout adds one to each.

One clean pair for each of the 7 days between washes, plus one for each of your 2 workouts a week, plus 3 spares for drying time.

Socks (pairs)

Same logic as underwear: one pair per day between washes, one per workout, 3 spares for drying time.

Sets, not pieces

Tops and bottoms get equally sweaty, so there is no saving from owning fewer shorts than t-shirts. Think in sets. Two sessions a week on weekly laundry is three sets; four sessions is five; five sessions on fortnightly laundry is eleven, which is when people discover why the laundry basket is always full. Sports bras run at about one per two sessions plus a spare, because most people rotate two per week.

Rewearing kit

Airing a top after a light session and wearing it again is common, and the calculator will simply overstate your need slightly if you do. Bacteria and odour build quickly in synthetic fabrics, and skin irritation is more likely, so we model one wear per wash and let you treat the number as a ceiling rather than a target.

Keep it out of the everyday count

Gym clothes that drift into everyday wear are how the t-shirt drawer doubles. The whole-wardrobe calculator keeps them in their own row for that reason; the t-shirt page explains the casual-tops side.

Questions people ask

How many gym clothes do I need?

One full set per workout between laundry loads, plus one spare. Three sessions a week on weekly laundry is four sets; five sessions on fortnightly laundry is eleven. Sweaty kit is a single-wear item, so rewearing does not reduce the count the way it does for jeans.

Is it OK to wear the same gym clothes twice?

Airing kit and wearing it again is common for light sessions, but bacteria and odour build quickly in synthetic fabrics, and skin irritation is more likely. The calculator assumes one wear per wash; if you rewear, treat its number as a comfortable ceiling.

How many pairs of gym leggings or shorts should I have?

The same as the number of sets: one per session per laundry cycle plus a spare. Bottoms and tops get equally sweaty, so there is no saving from owning fewer bottoms than tops.
