Socks
How many pairs of socks should I own?
Socks follow the same rule as underwear: one pair per day between washes, one per workout, a few spares for drying, plus a smarter pair if your job needs one. The drawer of fifty is a storage problem, not a requirement.
Socks (pairs)
Same logic as underwear: one pair per day between washes, one per workout, 3 spares for drying time.
The arithmetic
Weekly laundry is seven wearing days. Three runs a week add three pairs. An airer that takes two days in winter adds three spares; a tumble dryer adds one. A formal office adds a pair of dress socks so the black ones are never all in the wash. For most weekly washers that lands between ten and sixteen pairs on Balanced, which is exactly where the long Reddit threads on the subject end up after 60 comments of arguing.
Why people own so many more
Socks arrive as gifts, in multipacks and in the bottom of gym bags; they leave one at a time. The result is a drawer where half the pairs are odd, holed or the wrong thickness for the season. Counting the pairs you would actually choose to wear tomorrow usually produces a number close to the calculator’s, and the rest can go.
One useful trick
Buying identical socks in one colour turns the odd-sock problem into a non-problem and lets you hold the count close to Minimal without ever hunting for a match. It is the one place where owning fewer genuinely saves time every morning.

Questions people ask
How many pairs of socks should I own?
The same arithmetic as underwear: one pair per day between washes, one per workout, a few spares for drying, plus a dressier pair or two if your job needs them. Most weekly-laundry adults land between 10 and 20 pairs.
Is 40 pairs of socks too much?
Yes for almost any routine. Even fortnightly laundry with daily workouts tops out around 30. The exception is people who buy identical socks in bulk so odd socks stop mattering, which is a storage choice rather than a need.
How many socks does the average person own?
Polls suggest 15 to 30 pairs is typical, and most people admit a share of those are single, holed or never worn. Counting what you actually wear usually gives a much smaller number.
