How many work outfits should I have?
A work wardrobe is two different sums. Tops are worn once or twice and washed, so they follow your office days and laundry cycle. Tailored trousers, skirts and jackets are worn many times between cleans, so two to four covers almost everyone. Put together they make far more outfits than the piece count suggests.
Smart tops and shirts for work
3 office days a week, worn once before washing, plus one spare so a late wash never leaves you short.
Smart trousers and skirts
Tailored bottoms are worn several times between cleans; two is the floor so one can be at the cleaners.
Shirts and blouses
Five office days on weekly laundry, a fresh shirt each day: five plus one spare is six on Minimal, eight on Balanced. Three office days: four and six. Wear an undershirt and get two days from a shirt and the counts roughly halve. Fortnightly laundry doubles them, which is the real reason some people feel they “never have a clean shirt”: the wardrobe is fine, the cycle is long.
Tailoring
Trousers, skirts and suits are worn three to five times between cleans, so two is the floor (one at the cleaners) and three or four gives rotation. Formal codes add one pair of dress socks in the socks row so the black ones are never all in the wash.
How many outfits is that?
Six tops and three bottoms combine into eighteen outfits before a single jacket or accessory. The “twenty outfits” figure that appears in wardrobe research falls out of a very small number of garments once they mix and match, which is the argument for buying tops that go with every bottom you own.
